7 Ways YouTube is Changing in 2023 ๐
In a recent letter to the YouTube community, the platform's new CEO, Neal Mohan, shared his focus areas for the coming year. With his extensive industry expertise, Mohan is expected to introduce innovative changes and enhancements that will benefit the platform. Weโll be outlining some of his priorities here.
Part 1: Empowering Creators ๐ค
๐ฐ 1. Expanding Monetization Options
Beyond ads, YouTube plans to expand its subscription business, invest in shopping, and improve paid digital goods offerings. These options have already proven to be successful for creators, with South Korean creator ์ง์ฉ์ง (Jin Yong-jin) gaining over 30,000 channel members in just seven months after launching channel memberships.
๐ฌ 2. Providing More Support
YouTube has doubled the number of creators and partners who can receive live help through chat or email. In addition, the platform has increased the number of creators with a partner manager to provide strategic tips for success.
๐ฃ 3. Gathering Creator Feedback
The platform plans to expand access to its multi-language audio feature, a feature encouraged by creator feedback. YouTube is also looking to improve accessibility for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, with investments in machine learning resulting in automatic captions being provided in more languages.
๐ 4. Improving Community Experiences
The company plans to improve community experiences for creators with features such as gifted memberships on mobile devices. They are also adding features to make it simpler to remix gaming content into Shorts, allowing viewers to share their favorite moments from gaming streams easily.

Part 2: Building for the Future ๐
๐คย 5.ย AI Creation Tools
YouTube is developing new features for creators to expand their storytelling and raise their production value, from virtually swapping outfits to creating a film set through AIโs generative capabilities.
๐บ๏ธย 6.ย Improving YouTube TV
YouTube has adapted the mobile experience of Shorts to a TV-friendly format and launched Primetime Channels, a new way for users to watch content from their favorite streaming services on the YouTube app. YouTube is also bringing NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV, making YouTube the best place to watch football.
๐ 7. Improving Podcasting
YouTube is making it easier for creators and artists to showcase their podcasts on the platform with new features in YouTube Studio to publish podcasts and plans to bring audio and video-first podcasts to YouTube Music. Later this year, RSS integration will offer podcasters another way to upload their shows to YouTube.

Big Picture: As we look forward to the future of YouTube under the leadership of Neal Mohan, it's clear that the platform is dedicated to supporting creators and viewers alike. From expanding monetization options for creators to investing in technology and teams to ensure a safe and enriching user experience, YouTube constantly innovates to stay at the forefront of the digital landscape.
TikTok Under Extreme Pressure ๐ฅ

TikTok / Family Pairing
TikTok has announced new measures aimed at helping teens manage their time on the app. The platform is rolling out a 60-minute daily screen time limit for all accounts belonging to users under 18. The default time limit is set to arrive in the coming weeks, with users having the option to extend their screen time after entering a prompted passcode.
This move from TikTok is likely a response to the increased scrutiny and publicity around the app as concerns grow over the potential impact on mental health and privacy.
In recent years, TikTok has faced a number of bans in various countries, including the following:
India (over privacy and security concerns)
Canada (government devices)
United States (government devices)
European Union (government devices)
Taiwan (government devices)
Pakistan (banned four different times)
Big Picture: With its new screen time limit and other safety features, including "Family Pairing,โ TikTok seems to be trying to demonstrate its commitment to creating a safer environment for young people on its platform.
A New Twitch Record ๐พ

Kai Cenat / Twitch
Recently, Kai Cenat has made history by becoming the all-time most subscribed Twitch streamer of all time, surpassing the previous record held by Ludwig Ahgren. Cenat achieved this feat during a 30-day โsubathon,โ streaming non-stop and hitting an all-time high of 306,621 active subscribers on February 28. This achievement is significant, as only two other streamers, Tyler (Ninja) Blevins and Ludwig Ahgren, have reached the 200,000 subscriber milestone.
Kaiโs channel is free to stream, but subscribers can choose to support their favorite streamers and receive additional perks or content for $4.99-$24.99 USD/month. Cenat, who began his marathon on February 1 to mark Black History Month, became the first Black streamer on Twitch to reach 200,000 subscribers on February 22.
Big Picture: Ludwig Ahgren, the previous record holder, and rapper Drake have urged Twitch to offer Kai Cenat a contract that would financially compensate him for the significant attention he has brought to the platform. Ludwig's departure from Twitch to YouTube was partially due to the platform's lack of support and lower compensation, underscoring the importance of offering adequate resources and support to creators.
Congrats to @KaiCenat for breaking the all-time subscriber record ๐ very deserved
